Voting & Sessions

How voting sessions work — from starting a session to reviewing results.

Session lifecycle

1

Facilitator starts the session

The facilitator enters a story description (or Jira key) and clicks Start Session.

2

Members vote

Each member selects a card from the voting scale. Votes are hidden from others until the session is finalized.

3

Change your vote (optional)

Members can change their vote at any time before the facilitator finalizes the session.

4

Facilitator finalizes

The facilitator clicks Finalize to reveal all votes and display the results.

Abstaining from a vote

If a team member doesn't have enough context to estimate, they can click the coffee cup icon to abstain. Abstain votes are excluded from all statistical calculations, so they don't skew averages or modes.

Understanding results

When a session is finalized, you'll see:

  • Numeric scales: Average vote and the closest Fibonacci (or scale) value to that average.
  • T-shirt scales: The mode — the most commonly selected size.
  • Both: Total vote count and a breakdown of each member's vote.
Anchoring prevention

Votes are hidden until the facilitator reveals them. This prevents anchoring bias — the tendency for early votes to influence later ones. Everyone estimates independently.
